A Brave New World for Japanese Adaptations of Shakespeare: Rethinking Shakespeare Studies through Adaptations


This is the website for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Grant-in-Aid project, “A Brave New World for Japanese Adaptations of Shakespeare” and the Waseda / Birmingham Research Collaboration in Shakespeare Studies.

 

March 2016:  Waseda and Birmingham signs agreement to promote joint research

29 November 2016:  Professor Michael Dobson (Director, Shakespeare Institute) gives lecture, “Shakespeare, Rome, and Temporality, from Burbage to Ninagawa” at Waseda

21-22 January 2017: Shakespeare.Film.East.West at Waseda

Waseda and Birmingham organizes an international conference focused on Shakespeare and Film. Emeritus Professor Russell Jackson gave the keynote lecture, “‘Offence’s gilded hand’: Fighting Corruption in Three Postwar Hamlet Films.”

5 October 2017: Professor Ryuichi Kodama (Vice Director of The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum) and Hiroko Yamaguchi (Asahi Shinbun theater critic) lecture at the Shakespeare Institute on NInagawa

6 October 2017: “Ninagwa Shakespeare: A Memorial Symposium” at the Embassy of Japan in London

More than 100 participants gather to hear Professor Ryuichi Kodama interview kabuki actor Kyozo Nakamura, who was appearing in the revival of NINAGAWA Macbeth at the Barbican and a round table talk with Michael Dobson, Michael Billington, Phillip Breen, and Rosalind Fielding.

26-27 November 2019: Birmingham Day at Waseda

This includes a symposium with kyogen actor Mansai Nomura, Professor Tiffany Stern (Deputy Director, Shakespeare Institute), and Angus Jackson (theater director); and performance by Nomura and Kelly Hunter (director of the Flute Theatre).

5 March 2020: Symposium on Novelizations of Shakespeare at the Shakespeare Institute

Norimasa Morita, Rieko Suzuki, Tetsu Motoyama, Abigail Rockinson-Woodall, and Michael Dobson discuss prose adaptations in the Anglophone world and in Japan.

11 November 2021: “Hamlet, Translation, and the Cultural Conditions of Thought”: Lecture by Dr Jessica Chiba at the Shakespeare Institute

17-19 September 2022  Found in Translation: Understanding Shakespeare through Intercultural Dialogue – assoc-shakesfit (waseda.jp)

26 November 2022  “Shakespeare, Jonson and the Publication of Plays in Eary Modern England”: Lecture by Emeritus Professor John Jowett (Shakespeare Institute) at Waseda

 2 February 2023  Symposium “Looking at Shakespeare from the non-Anglophone World (birmingham.ac.uk))” at the Shakespeare Insitute
